Mastercard Retail Location Insights

Evaluate the sales-based performance of retail locations using transaction-based scoring and analytics

What is Mastercard Retail Location Insights?

Mastercard Retail Location Insights (MRLI) draws on Mastercard transaction data to evaluate the sales-based performance of retail locations across Australia. Using an indexed scoring system, MRLI ranks each location against all other locations across a number of different merchant categories. MRLI scores are provided from the mesh block level, all the way up through the census hierarchy to the state level.

Five (5) individual scores and a composite (upfront) score are provided for each location:

  • Monthly sales (value)
  • Number of monthly transactions (volume)
  • Average ticket size
  • Sales growth year over year
  • Stability ranking of the merchant turnover versus a year ago
  • UpFront Score derived from the five component scores above to provide a single measure of performance for a given location.

With over 2.3 billion cards globally and over 160 million transactions per hour, MRLI is not a proxy for behaviour - it is actual spending behaviour.

MRLI will compliment CoreLogic’s existing commercial property product suite and offer a new level of insight for commercial retail property.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mastercard Retail Location Insights?

Mastercard Retail Location Insights is a suite of new products that 1) measure the sales-based performance of a retail location by using anonymised and aggregated Mastercard transaction data to create Retail Location Scores and 2) provide insights to help industry professionals validate, evaluate and benchmark retail locations throughout Australia.

What are retail location scores?

Retail location scores are derived from anonymised and aggregated Mastercard transaction data generated at retail locations from credit, debit and prepaid card payments. Mastercard leverages its proprietary 2+ billion credit and debit card network, processing 160 million transactions per hour, to develop proprietary Mastercard Retail Location Scores. These scores may be used to evaluate the sales-based dynamics of a location measuring sales (dollars), transactions (units), ticket size (average sales price), growth and stability of a retail location. In addition, these individual components are calculated in an overall performance score for the location, known as the Composite UpFront Score.

Can I look at the scores on an industry basis?

Yes. Mastercard provides retail locations broken down by select industry categories such as Restaurants and Apparel. See “Categories” tab on the interactive map.

What is the exact information being used?

Mastercard uses the location of merchants and the date, time and amount of the transaction to create a “time series of data” to build its products. Mastercard aggregates, anonymises and normalises this information at all levels of the geographic hierarchy.
