About This Project

Development of a new Australian habitat exhibit and eco-tourist facility to be known as the Australia Habitat and Taronga Wildlife Retreat. Stage 1 works: Demolition of existing structures, including part of the rustic garden bed wall, parts of the layout of the early pathways & landscaping. Relocation of the circular kiosk within the site to expose the original fountain base. Construction of 5 connected accommodation pods ranging between 2 and 4 storeys in height consisting of a total 58 rooms and 4 suites. Construction of a new 4 storey (including one subterranean level) addition to the existing Taronga Centre to accommodate a new kitchen and dining facility, lower ground level includes plant rooms, staff amenities and back of house areas; ground Level includes a new kitchen, staff office, & amenities; level 1 includes a dining room, small kitchen, & plating area; & level 2 includes a dining/function room, plating area, & terrace. Construction of a new single storey guest lodge to house reception, bar, storage, guest interaction facilities with adjacent platypus exhibit & animal encounter facilities. Construction of a new native Australian wildlife exhibition including: kangaroo habitat; new aviaries; walkthrough exhibition containing native Australian wildlife including echidnas, koalas, bandicoots, potaroos, wallabies, & freshwater eels. Landscaping, including naturalistic and endemic native Australian vegetation and a man-made creek. Walkthrough exhibition for guests from the proposed guest lodge and new platypus enclosure through the proposed new open exhibits; & interpretative and directional signage. Stage 2 works: alterations to the existing Taronga Centre including additional stairs and lift access and enclosing roof and lobby space, these proposed works seek to improve accessibility for guests within existing buildings. The accommodation pods include a native planted skin along the northern facades & clad in reconstituted hardwood timber, & contain timber & perforated metal blades.
